Smibs.com offers two products – Doorbell, a web-based sales and contact management application, and the Smibs Network, a business network for freelancers, designers and companies. Doorbell can be used independently of the Smibs Network, but the two products are automatically integrated if the user wishes to use the Smibs Network. The Doorbell product is divided into Contacts, Tasks and Groups. Contacts are individual people, Groups are companies or groups of individuals in related industries and Tasks are to-do items associated with a Contact or Group. The Doorbell application is a complete CRM (Customer Relationship Management) tool. The Smibs Network consists of companies and individuals who network to do business with each other and/or collaborate on projects. Users can search the network by name, skill, location or keyword and add friends that they think may be useful in their business or venture. Users have a profile, which provides complete details about the user or their company. The user has a Dashboard page, where they can easily view recent activity in their network, access the Doorbell application, and check messages and invitations to become friends. Users can also see a brief summary of scheduled tasks from their Dashboard.
Edmonton, Alberta-based Smibs.com was launched in October 2008 by Peter Urban, currently CEO and President and Forrest Zeisler, currently CSS. The site has undergone continuous growth since launch, and is used by thousands of companies and individuals.
Competition to Smibs.com comes from sites such as LinkedIn, Bantam Live and SalesForce. LinkedIn is more formal than Smibs, while SalesForce offers a more similar service. Both of these sites are much larger than Smibs, but Smibs is growing rapidly. LinkedIn does not offer a full-featured CRM tool such as Doorbell, however SalesForce does integrate one into their site. Bantam Live is a new startup still in public beta which offers a service very similar to SalesForce.
Page loads are quite responsive, as are file uploads and downloads. The Doorbell application functions much like a dedicated desktop application. The user interface is intuitive, and navigation is obvious. There is a convenient top menu bar shown on all pages on the site. There is no advertising displayed on the Smibs.com site.
Registration to Smibs.com is free and is required to use the site. The registration process asks for first and last name, username, email address and timezone. Activation of the email address is required. Once the user’s account is activated, they are prompted to complete their profile, search for and add contacts and build a task list. A free membership is limited to 2 users, 5MB of storage and 250 contacts.
Several levels of premium membership are available.
